Let’s get messy

A lot of starting-out counsellors worry about whether they have got it all together and how they can be “professional” enough to do the right thing by their client. But Carl Rogers, the pioneer of person-centered therapy is famous for insisting that the therapeutic relationship has got to be more than this. The therapist must be willing to be real in order to make a genuine human connection with clients. Sometimes being real means being aware that our lives are messy too.

The hidden servant

In the third session in this series laying foundations for pastoral counselling and life coaching, we look at the model of Jesus as one who ministered in anonymity. Isaiah 42 paints a picture of the servant Messiah who is able to empower others whilst walking in humility and obscurity. It can be tiring and sacrificial to pour our lives into others without being able to “tell the story” but ultimately we hear the “Well done, good and faithful servant.” from the audience of One.

Learning to trust

It’s easy to believe that God is with us when things are going well. But it’s more difficult when we face losses and challenges. Right now, many people are struggling to trust God completely. We can experience victory in one area but still struggle to trust God in others; to keep on believing for a good outcome in places where we have not yet seen breakthrough, or have suffered disappointment in the past. This message is about how much Jesus trusted the Father in his darkest hour.

God who is there

I used to think that the driving force of my life’s work was to help people to find freedom and that’s still a very important goal for me. But I have realised in these challenging times that freedom is a hard road to walk and many of us yearn for safety, connection, and intimacy. I have chosen to start this introduction to the fundamentals of Christian counselling and life coaching by challenging the philosophy that we all have to walk this difficult road alone. We are not alone, because God is the God who is there for us.
